SOSW 30th Anniversary: How to recreate the synthesized speech in UT1-Dot

It’s 30 years since the original Surfing On Sine Waves LP was released by Warp in January 1993 (RareAFX attended the Polygon Window launch party at the Leadmill Sheffield on Jan 8th, 3 days before SOSW was launched). Doesn’t time fly.

Find and Download HATARI (any version should work) – an Atari ST Emulator – and the ATARI ST “SPEECH.TOSFILE – RareAFX used this Youtube clip + Google Drive download in the comments on that video.

Open Hatari, press F12 or FN+F12 ; the HATARI MAIN MENU panel should appear

Click HARD DISKS

Click the BROWSE button under GEMDOS drive

Navigate to the folder you have downloaded the SPEECH .TOS file to

SELECT the .TOS file, click OK

Click BACK TO MAIN MENU, then OK then OK on the ‘Emulated systems must be reset…’ popup.

Hatari will restart and boot into the green TOS screen shown below

Double-click DISK C

Double click the SPEECH.TOS file and the Speech program will now open (you may need to maximise the HATARI window for the mouse to work OK on PC or Mac)

Type the following lines in – as written – separately (the Speech emulator can only do short sentences);

  1. Inducing mindslaves into the RE DAMS
  2. that are in side with electronic techno music
  3. Controller to manual by AY FEX machine program
  4. acid like robot oscillation

If you wish, edit the results together in a WAV editor, speed it up about 10-15% add a Reverb on, you’re pretty much there.

Our results can be heard here.
